STRENGTH TRAINING FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Obesity trends in the United States have been steadily climbing for the past fifteen years.  The increase in adult obesity has led to a higher incidence of Type II diabetes and coronary heart disease.  Many overweight adults have tried numerous times to lose weight only to regain the weight lost and sometimes even additional pounds.   The lack of positive results do not seem to deter most folks from joining the latest celebrity endorsed weight loss trend, diet , or product.   The truth about losing weight and keeping it off does not make national headlines or put dollars in the bank accounts of marketing firms.

Strength training was once believed to be only for body builders or professional athletes.  Recent research studies, however, advocate the benefits of strength training to lose excess body fat.  Most reputable weight loss programs now include not only cardiovascular exercise for caloric expenditure but also include a strength training component for developing additional muscle mass.   Beginning at around age 25, the average adult will lose 1 1/2 to 2 percent of muscle mass mass per year.  The only way to add back some of the loss of muscle and avoid becoming overfat is to engage in a safe effective strength training program.   The proven scientific way to lose weight and keep it off is to engage in a program which includes not only diet and cardiovascular exercise but strength training as well.
